First of all I do not claim to be a 'hyper-realism' artist, I am someone who just enjoys drawing, and if what I draw looks a little like the reference I am using then great - I do not draw a pixel at a time, I make long sweeping pencil strokes, layer over lighter work, erase like crazy and basically have fun. In most cases you can still see pencil strokes, un-blended areas of graphite, and lots of mistakes - but to me that what drawing is all about
One of the ways I try to improve my work is to compare what I have drawn with the reference image I used to create it, it can be a fun way of seeing just how close - or how far away from the original you have got - I thought I would share a couple of examples with you.

I find placing the drawn picture next to the photograph, cropping them the same and adjusting the tone, contrast and exposure you can see just how close you can get to the original.
Most people think that all pencil artists want to achieve some form of 'Hyper-Realism' and I am sure that a lot do, for me I am looking to achieve something that is realistic and if that falls into the category of realism then great - if it still shows pencil marks, or you can see shading or something not quite perfect then I am cool with that also - as long as you enjoy what your looking at.
I draw certain objects, people, concepts etc. because I either have an interest in the subject matter, or I want to test my skills, but always because I like what I see - if I am forced to draw something I find it very difficult to 'give-it-my-all' and it always shows in the final piece.
By the way this is not a competition to guess which is a photograph and which is a drawing - that would be too easy, and in fact I want my work to look like it has been drawn - otherwise - what's the point? Hope you liked looking as much as I enjoyed drawing these.

Update April 2016
First of all lets get the apologies out of the way - sorry for not being a good 'deviant' - my time on DA this year has been woefully poor, it would be easy to blame this on apathy and a sense that DA seems to have lost its way over the past 6-12 months, but it is probably more to do with life getting in the way of a hobby, and slowly turing that hobby into a career!
An update on my last two journals; firstly the open gallery (Taking Online - Offline!) this is still something I want to do - I have had to put it back a bit due to issues over gallery availability, which is still an issue but I can see an opening during this summer and hope to
Pick your favourite Drawings to win 2000 points
At this time of the year I like to hold a contest to find out what you liked in the world of Pencil/Graphite/Charcoal drawings on DA in 2015
However the contest has a little bit of a twist in that the voters get the prizes rather than the artists! Why? Well the artists already get lots of praise, faves, watchers and comments - so this contest gives their loyal and faithful supporters a chance to win some points :)
Over the years this has proven to be really popular with the competition receiving literally 1.000's of views and comments - so I hope that everyone who reads this will have a go - after all it is just a bit of fun and anyone coul
1000 point giveaway!!!
It looks like a significant milestone on my DA Account is about to be reached with Page Views Hitting 150,000!!! So it feels appropriate that in return I offer something back to all those great watchers and those who view, comment and fave my work. For that reason this competition is only open to those people who watch me. (To be clear - only people who have been watching me before the 19th October 2015)
So to win the 1000 points all you need to do is take a screen grab or photo of my profile statistics when It reaches 150,000 Pageviews and post it as a comment underneath this journal or as a note to me directly - its as simple as that :D
