The Ultimate Eye! (WIP) by Paul-Shanghai The Ultimate Eye! (WIP) by Paul-Shanghai
I know its cliché - but everyone needs at least one eye drawing in their gallery - so rather than just do 'another' eye drawing, I thought I would go for the 'Ultimate Eye' drawing :)

I managed to find some excellent A0 Smooth drawing paper in my local Shanghai Art Supply shop ("Marie's Art Shop" - doesn't sound very Chinese eh!) and couldn't wait to draw on it, I have some amazing projects to start, but first I wanted to get this one out of the way - its an eye! But no ordinary eye - this one measure approx. 80 cm by 40 cm, with some of those lashes being a good 30 cm in length :)

I have spend a good 20 hours on this already, and have about another 10 to get it completely finished - thought I would share this WIP with you, as when I finally upload the finished work, it will probably just look like any other ordinary eye on DA - but for now, it is the 'Ultimate Eye' :D:D

I should have mentioned that the reference was paid for (by me :)) from these guys © Valua Vitaly [link]

No, I have never used Canson - my normal portraits are done on Daler Rowney Bristol Board - this however was done on unbranded, sold by the sheet local art supply paper :)

This is spectacular. And, I don't know if I'd say it's cliche at all... I have a couple, and I know artists who are solely eye-drawers.

When I first drew this I thought it would be my only 'eye' but I now understand the appeal - I now have 2 more eyes in my collection!!

Thanks for commenting - appreciate it :)

I think you need to go big to get the detail. Cannot believe I'm just starting to see that now.
Great piece, thanks for sharing and inspiring me

Glad it inspires you - I love drawing BIG, but try and mix it up by going small every now again also - the BIG drawings take too long :)

This is so fantastic. Can you give me some advice as you've drawn these lighting effects? Do you use a special pen or are you doing this with an eraser?

No pen - just an eraser, I have tried using a white gel pen in the past, but didn't get great results - I find that if you try and put a 'wet' gel pen over graphite it just 'smudges', of course if you keep the area clean it may work better (but then why add white to white paper!) - I guess the key is also contrast - an erased area against a darker background works well as long as there is some fading, otherwise it just looks sharp.
I am no expert - but hope it helps :D

Yes that made me very on. I go in the summer to a college of design and I have to finish a book and am always looking for useful tips. Haast you took out a pencil eraser? Or was that just a normal eraser? I'm getting too much with normal eraser erased. It's really great that you are so quickly write back. Thank you so much :)

I use a mechanical pencil eraser, like a mechanical pencil - but with an eraser inside :) it is about 5mm in diameter which allows me to get sharp edges easily - however they are not easy to find, I have only found this in my local Shanghai art shop - it is a Chinese brand, and I haven't seen it anywhere else!

Good look with art college - I never go he chance go, so I hope you make the most of it :)

When it is this big, you start with lots of clean white paper - all you have to do is add detail :)
