Description

One of the reasons for this  The Limitations of Graphite....Something I have been interested in since starting drawing a couple of years ago was – what could or could not be drawn with a graphite pencil.  I am not talking about skill, or experience level, but what subjects are impossible to capture with just a sharpened stick?
Obviously something that depends completely on a colour range loses its impact when created in grey – a rainbow for example or a neon sign perhaps.  But is there anything else that is simply impossible to draw with a pencil?  Well many artists have set out to prove that nothing is impossible;
Animal                                                          Vegetable

Mineral
 was this little drawing I have finally finished :D

The reference used to create this was by a wonderful photographer :iconaztil: who kindly allowed me to be crazy enough to convert it into a pencil drawing - in fact he gave me permission some 15 months ago, however I never thought I could pull it off and only started to attempt such a monstrous beast about 1 month ago - yes it has taken me about 1 month to draw this, or around 60 hours, why? well because filling a space 64cm X 43cm with graphite pencil takes a long time, especially if you want to make it look like something :D

I am not sure I will ever attempt to draw a landscape like this ever again, and i definitely do not want to see a rock for a long time - still, I am pretty happy with the results, and will definitely be hanging this one on the wall.  I hope you like it - although I suspect it could be a personal fave, rather than a widely loved piece - I am just glad it finished and I can get on with drawing something simpler :)

Drawn on locally sourced smooth Bristol Board, with traditional pencils (HB, 2B and 8B), blending stumps, erasers and a bit of tissue to fluff up those clouds :)

Think I was drawn to this as it's somewhat reminiscent of Sebastiao Salgado's photography which I've been looking at a bit today. Very nice work, the word 'supple' seems to spring to mind, can almost feel the moistness of the rocks on the shore...
